Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
