Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
